Raven + Lily is a socially-conscious lifestyle brand committed to employing at-risk women around the world to make fair trade collections of jewelry, clothing, and accessories to help break the cycle of poverty. They’re already working with artisans in Ethiopia, India, Cambodia and the US (refugees in Austin, TX and formerly homeless women in Los Angeles’ Skid Row)—and now they want to expand their collection by launching a new partnership in Kenya with the Maasai women from the Esiteti community. These tribal women have incredible beadwork skills, but lack experience with modern designs and access to the Western market, which is exactly why Raven + Lily was created.
Raven + Lily has seen women’s lives changed as a result of the employment they receive through these partnerships. Specifically these Maasai women are helping to eradicate FGM (female genital mutilation) from their community, and they are the first generation to send girls to school. The money Raven + Lily is raising will help cover the project set up, design work, marketing, and initial inventory costs. It takes a lot of resources to launch a partnership like this, but the good news is, once it gets started it becomes sustainable.
The Maasai women have collectively decided to send 50% of all the money received from the Raven + Lily orders to fund the education of their children at the Esiteti Primary School. And Raven + Lily is inviting everyone—including Darling readers!—to be part of creating this change through their Kickstarter campaign.
As a thank you to their Kickstarter supporters, Raven + Lily is offering items from their Spring 2014 collection so you can be the first to wear them. And for the truly adventurous, they’re even offering an opportunity to take the trip of a lifetime to Kenya to meet the Maasai women on a seven-day journey with Raven + Lily.
