Monthly Music Mix: Spotlight on New Zealand

Moving closer into summer, let’s get out of town for a bit. Unless you are, or were, a resident … you might not be aware of how they like to do things down in New Zealand this time of year. The month of May is officially dubbed “NZ Music Month” by locals. Running since 2001 and held by the NZ Music Commission, this annual music appreciation series has become a tradition celebrated by multiple radio stations and independent music organizations. Their mission is to promote homegrown recording artists and bands through sponsored live concerts, media coverage and a countrywide acknowledgement of their art.

After seeing musicians like Lorde, Kimbra and Ladyhawke go on to achieve international acclaim, artists across New Zealand have a lot to look forward to with many eyes on their region. NZ Music May is an exciting opportunity for up and coming acts to get their sounds out there. So, seeing as we are fans of the likes of Lorde and the aforementioned, we were curious as to what other heaps of gold this country has up their sleeves. Thus, a music mix was born. We respectfully dedicate this month’s playlist to the choice talent that is the New Zealand music scene.
