Continued from History of Fashion With Regards to the 20th Century
Let’s look at 1910-1920
Key Silhouettes: Hobble Skirt and the empire waistline–one freeing women, one putting them back in chains.
Details: Intricate hats for women; for men, collars and ties.
Designer: Paul Poiret
Economic: The invention of the automobile caused a need for clothing to travel in–dust coats, wind shield hats, glasses.
Social: The Women’s Suffrage Movement stirred the desire in women to have the right to vote. Involving fashion, they wanted to combat legislation that wanted to enforce the mandatory wearing of corsets and a hemline no shorter than 1 inch off the ground.
