A woman kneeling in the snow as she pets her dog

We are bringing “Darling Letters” from your inbox to the blog! We love the art of letter writing and believe it helps build authentic community. Our editors and contributors have thoughtfully written encouraging letters to cut through the busyness and speak straight to your heart.

Lately, I’ve been learning from my dog’s morning ritual. As the winter sun makes its way through the dining room windows, Bella curls up between the spots of light dappling the carpet, relaxed by the bright return of a faithful friend.

The warmth in these kaleidoscopic beams of winter light always surprises me. The window filters out the season’s chill, as if inviting me to notice the subtle beauty of days I once deemed grey and mundane.

How often do we overlook the pockets of light around us? The end-of-winter stretch is often met with an attitude of endurance, counting down the days until a sunnier, greener spring. What I’m learning is that instead of merely tolerating this season, we can choose to embrace it and revel in all of its uniqueness.

These days are not barren. Like my dog finding rest in the light shining through my window, I too want to seek out the richness of winter, the vibrancy of the cool February sun and the wonder hidden in every day.

As we continue through these early months of 2021, let’s seek out reminders of warmth and play; there is light all around us, we just need to find it and rest there.
