In the quest for lasting health and natural beauty, there are many companies willing to help you along your journey. Yet, few of those companies actually combine the right blend of professional expertise with a solid business plan to yield a stellar product.

Enter: January Labs.

We had the pleasure of interviewing founder January Olds to get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to go from recognizing a need to developing a product to fit that need. Her line of skincare products are simple yet powerful, and will leave your face feeling fresh, fortified and smelling better than anything a drugstore could ever hope to provide. If you’ve ever been wary of leaving the house with only moisturizer on, you have yet to discover what a revitalizing day cream can do.

Dive into this Beautician’s story below, then be sure to enter the massive giveaway we’re hosting to win the entire JL skincare collection!

Darling Magazine: What was the catalyst for starting your own line of skincare products?

January: I worked for one of the top skin care lines for a little over 8 years. During that time I traveled extensively training and educating spas all over the world. I was able to see first hand what both the spas and the consumers needed and what the market was not offering them. I think when you hit a particular age and place in your life you realize it’s just the right time to take that big step into the unknown. That time for me was three years ago and starting January Labs has been the best decision I have ever made.

DM: More and more beauty companies are seeking the “all-natural” tagline. How do you strive to standout from among the rest?

January: I’ve worked to make sure my line is the perfect combination of science and nature. My ingredients are all natural, yet I use a lot of very active ingredients so you really see a rapid change in the skin. The “all-natural” tagline has become so abused in recent years that it is really hard to decipher what is and what is not.  All my ingredients are paraben-free, sulfate-free and organic. My products also differ because they are pH-optimized so the ingredients are actually placed in an environment in which they can work effectively. That is why most see results in only a few days!

DM: What product are you most excited about?

January: Honestly, all of them! If I had to choose, it would definitely be the Day and Night Duo (Revitalizing Day Cream and Retexturizing Night Cream) These two products are my newest “babies”. They work together synergistically and the results are incredible. These products truly change the skin in only a couple of days. The feedback is always the same — glowing, retextured, pore-minimizing, radiant, balanced skin. That’s really what we are all looking for, right?

DM: How would you like to see the line grow?

January: While I want to keep the line small and simple, I am always thinking about the potential of January Labs. Currently, I am working on an eye cream that will be ready later on in the year. I am also going to be producing an SPF soon which I am really excited about. I want the line to evolve as new ingredients are discovered and keep the need of good beauty products relevant and tangible.

DM: What’s been your biggest success so far, and what has it taught you about starting your own business?

January: What I find to be my biggest success so far is the response from other respected estheticians and buyers in the business. To have my message and philosophy translated to major influencers and pioneers in the industry means so much. To me, that is true success. I think a business that is based on simply a good product is what is most important … everything else will come. Patience has been one of the biggest lessons for me and is also consequently what has ended up teaching me the most. At the same time, a lot of success goes to those who crave the kind of product we make; the consumers are important beyond a monetary and business sense of course, but have become a part of our purpose to doing what we do. The January Labs approach to marketing goes hand in hand with education. It’s our goal to educate people to equate beauty and health as integral.

DM: In addition to caring for skin from the outside, what are some tips for keeping your skin healthy from the inside?

January: I am a huge proponent of a healthy lifestyle. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good glass of wine and the occasional burger, but balance is so important. Beauty goes beyond the external and that’s what I want to make sure to communicate. We can be people who use good products, endeavor in good physical activities but at the same time, we have to care about the people we are. Beauty goes only so far when it comes to the surface, but we strive to be a company who fosters both the importance of beauty inside as well as outside. Sometimes working on the external, like skin care can seem more manageable—we just hope to be used as a stepping stone to a wholeness that is ultimately and consequently, beautiful.

DM: What do you think is the biggest misconception about skin care?

January: The biggest misconception of skin care is that it is complicated. It’s really quite simple. I think if you have a good sense of ingredients to stay away from, you can eliminate a lot of the clutter. This industry is full of misconceptions with packaging and fads. Sticking to the basics and with clean ingredients is truly the best way to go.

DM: So many women struggle with problematic skin. What encouragement would you give to someone who feels hopeless in the quest for clear skin?

January: As Audrey Hepburn said “Happiest girls are the prettiest”. This kind of joy will lead to a stress free life and confidence is really the first step to beauty. Again, it starts from within! Changing your lifestyle with diet, a workout and clean living is a start, but we truly see one’s beauty in their shiny, sparkly, happy eyes. I say, start there!

  • You read my mind last night. I’m also using MT for my weblog and am debating how to effectivley go about integrating a photoblog with it. , but would rather keep myself self-sufficient on my own server. Although I’m a PC user (and thus don’t have iPhoto) the rest of your set-up has got me thinking a lot clearer about what I can do, and the best way to do it.And I concur with #6: “the transparent ‘Next Photo’/’Previous Photo’, it’s beautiful.”

  • Irit / Pick me, pick me! My nephew is kind of young for these still (although he IS a total genius…) but he loves books and my sister (his mom) is an early childhood educator. But mostly, my nephew is simply the cutest and smartest kid ever. Seriously – check out my photos of him. And no, I am not biased

  • An impressive share, I merely given this onto a colleague who was basically doing small analysis with this. And the man in reality bought me breakfast because I discovered it for him.. smile. So permit me to reword that: Thnx with the treat! But yeah Thnkx for spending lots of time to go over this, I am strongly concerning this and enjoy reading a lot much more about this topic. If at all possible, as you become expertise, do you mind updating your website with an increase of details? It truly is really useful for me. Huge thumb up because of this post!

My favourite skin care tip is don’t over wash your face. Sometimes in the Summer I feel so grimy I want to wash my face 10 times a day which only dries it out and makes it worse. Remembering to wash in the morning and evening only is key.

I think I’d disagree with that study. I would think someone who smokes & is depressed, as a teen, would do so because of their environment. Not smoke because they’re depressed, or vice versa. Another possibility is that it could be an economic factor.
