the art of being a woman

Our #GivingTuesday Donation Recommendations

It’s #GivingTuesday!

Founded six years ago by New York’s 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation, Giving Tuesday was created to bring balance to the frenzy of buying and sales that accompany the holiday time surrounding Thanksgiving. Even though many are buying for friends and family on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday serves as a moment to remember that the Christmas season is about bringing shelter, warmth and care to those in need as much as it’s about being cozy and feasting with family. So many of us feel that sense of powerlessness around global issues of humanity, but we at Darling have seen with our own eyes the tremendous effect every dollar has to a person in need of clean water, shelter or transitional housing.

So it is that today, we encourage you all to pause as you linger over the “Buy” or “Subscribe” buttons on our (or any) site, and instead take that money you might have spent and invest it into one of the many incredible non-profit and care organizations.

Here’s a list of a few of the organizations that our Darling family will be investing in today and over the holiday season:

1) Charity: Water. As they say, “Clean water changes everything,” and this stellar company aims to end the water crisis within our lifetime, and through access, aid, and empowerment they are making real changes that we so get behind. Go to charitywater.org to donate and also Darling Issue No. 20 for our feature on them.

2) Downtown Women’s Center (Los Angeles). Founded in 1978, the DWC is the only organization in Los Angeles exclusively dedicated to addressing the needs of women overcoming poverty and homelessness in Skid Row. Their incredible excellence, compassion, and drive to reach women are one of the reasons we at Darling have chosen to work with them over this December, and will be hosting a dinner at one of their locations to serve the women there. Go to downtwonwomenscenter.org for more information on how to donate and be involved.

3) International Justice Mission. Darling is committed to imparting dignity and value to all women, which is why we have partnered with IJM, a global organization that protects the poor from violence in the developing world. They partner with local authorities to rescue victims of violence, bring criminals to justice, restore survivors and strengthen justice systems. Go to ijm.org to donate today.

4) Dressember. Dressember the movement exists to equip a community of advocates to fight for the dignity of all people. Advocates choose to wear a dress (or a tie) each day in December to make a statement on the dignity of the marginalized and forgotten, while raising funds that go to partners that work solely in project that fight for freedom for children from sex trafficking.
