Music, like any piece of art, has the power to surprise us with ourselves — to unearth hidden fears or emotions and transform them into powerful tools of self-confidence.

And Brynn Elliot’s latest single, “Might Not Like Me,” does just that.

With what, we’re sure, is bound to be the best hook of the summer, this song is permission for women everywhere to put our best everything forward. Holding back our interests, abilities or even quirkier sides out of fear someone won’t approve is to cater to lesser things. And we’re meant for so much more.

More from Brynn:

I wrote this song about a period of time when I decided to hide and play down parts of me in a relationship. I was afraid of not being accepted because of those aspects of myself. It was a song that responded to this moment in my life and revealed a pattern throughout my whole life of being afraid of what other people think.

When I sing it, I embrace that I am fearfully and wonderfully made and so I don’t need to hide anymore. When I sing it, I accept that it’s okay if some people don’t like me. My hope is that it is empowering for others not to hide as well. I hope it inspires those whose ears hear it to open up and embrace every aspect of themselves, every aspect that makes them beautifully human.

  1. I’m sure there are so many who relate, but I had to comment on the part where I downplayed myself in my relationship for 7 years, 7 prime years – but that makes me so much more grateful for the realization, and the fact that I turned it all around ! Believe in yourself – period.
