Dear Socks,
Oh, that joyous moment when I slip my freezing feet into your warm comfort. Bliss. It’s springtime and my feet are already warm, hot even here in Southern California, but that doesn’t mean I have to say goodbye to you, my cozy little friends.
This spring I’ve decided to embrace my love for you year round, challenging myself to include you even when the sun is shining. Since lists of five are so common these days, and the number six often gets left out, here are my top six reasons for inviting you to stay in my spring wardrobe:
1. YOUR ROLE IN CONTRAST: I love the way you add a touch of contrast in the perfect way. When I have a really girly dress on, but I don’t want to be fully feminine, I wear you knitted as a rib. Or, sometimes I feel like my look is too dressy but when I choose you in cotton, the outfit looks just right. You bring balance. I’ll wear you with sneakers and a dress any day of the week.
2. YOUR ADDED PUNCH: “Gosh, my outfit is so plain,” I think that all the time. I am a complete minimalist. Half the time I don’t mind, but when I do and need something, there you are. You’re a great accessory and can elevate a look. I love wearing you with a heel and a cropped jean. It just feels so right sometimes.
3. YOUR COMRADERY WITH SANDALS: Spring is all about sandals. Guess what looks cute with sandals? You! You really stand out. I love seeing you through leather straps looking so graphic and chic. And when you are thinner with nylon, it’s the ultimate best. There is something unexpected about you that turns heads every time.
4. YOUR LOVE OF COLOR: I often find my color in you. When I wear black or neutrals and need to something to spruce up my outfit, I’ll add your bright, colorful threads for a pop; that works wonders. I love showing you off with a dress or skirt and you even look amazing with a rolled or cropped pant. I’ve also been known to try you on in a colorful print. My friends take notice of you.
5. YOUR FUNCTIONALITY: I love getting outdoors. You’re the best to have on hand for all activities. You can be tall and scrunched down with sneakers, focused on looking stylish, or be there for function. Whether I am on a boat, playing softball or going on a walk, you keep me fashionable and comfortable. If I want to keep my love for you a secret, you even come in little tiny versions that slide inside my shoe, so no one (but me) will know you are there.
6. YOU’RE A NON-CONFORMIST: No one tells you what to do. You’re a chameleon. You can be short, knee high, bright or muted. You can morph into any style. You look sporty when I need you too, yet you bring a feminine feel with your lace or color. You add variety. You are open to it all.
Socks, I appreciate your loyalty to me. Thank you for being there when I look boring or when I just need some fabric between my feet and my leather insoles. Whatever the situation, I know you have my back. And you bring killer style to boot. (Pun intended.)
