The days are getting shorter, and time spent in the kitchen seems to be getting comparably longer. Take silky squash soup up a notch with an amazing relish. Make the easiest applesauce ever by tossing peeled, chopped apples in your slow cooker while you work on some soup. Start your weekend with the scent of sizzling butter and cinnamon in the air. You can even top your whole wheat-yogurt-cinnamon pancakes with the applesauce.

It’s the time of year where leaves are crunching underfoot, the evening air is deliciously chilly and the colors are changing to crimson and gold.

Or, perhaps you’d like it to feel  like autumn, but it’s still 90 degrees out and the season is not yet turning near you. Either way, you can still make it feel like fall inside by getting aromas of cinnamon, apple and squash floating throughout your home.

I have a love-hate relationship with epic novels. The Red Horse by Corti, The Idiot by Dostoevsky, the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I love the gasps and sighs and ups and downs of that first read. I get enamoured with the character development and crave the distraction at work waiting for lunch when I can read while I eat my soup. Nothing beats the kind of 3am and my light’s still on because I need to get to the next chapter thrill. Yet, even though I quest continually to find the next “big novel,” I in turn truthfully hate something about each one: I’ll never read it for the first time again.

My hometown of Istanbul is the only city in the world that spans two continents; it’s the perfect blend of both Asia and Europe, with an Asian side that’s full of ethnic vibes and exotic, colorful bazaars and a European side that’s newer, more modern and hip.

During its more than 2,000-year history, Istanbul has been the capital of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Now Turkey’s most important city from a cultural and economic perspective, it’s also the fifth-largest city in the world by population. It’s a city that offers something unlike anything I’ve experienced anywhere else in the world, and I’m excited to share my favorite places and bits of travel wisdom with you, below.

Sure, counting calories may lead to short-term weight loss, but it doesn’t serve us in the long run. It doesn’t create healthy habits, control cravings, prevent inflammation, or ward off disease. (Plus, eating portion-controlled French toast is just no way to live!) Let’s abandon the calories in/calories out mindset.

Instead, let’s grab a greater understanding of how to optimize the way our body works, and find effortless sustainability.

Adventurers are living in a time when satiating our deepest sense of wanderlust is no longer a luxury reserved for the rich and famous. With frequent flier programs, “travel hacks” and cheap accommodations marketed specifically toward explorers of the world, we are increasingly able to book vacations in the most exotic locations without having to break the bank. And let me tell you, it’s a great feeling to book an adventure of a lifetime on a dime!

Yet, while I traipsed through the wild jungles and gritty city streets of Thailand, pleased with my penny-pinching plans and ready to see the best of the “land of smiles,” there were moments filled with incredible wonder and splendor followed by an intense feeling of guilt and privilege (a strange and new emotion for me).

It’s rare to have a day go by where the words “I’m so busy,” don’t pass through our mind or cross our lips. We fill our calendars to the point where even finding the time to relax seems like a chore. That moment of burnout feels inevitable; the “I just want to crawl in bed after a long day” syndrome plagues us. So, where do we find the strength to ditch a Netflix binge and follow through on that long-awaited night of hosting friends?

The healthiest approach for beating ‘flake’ temptation is two-fold. It’s a combination of integrity and fellowship.

Many of us have heard about the importance of establishing a morning routine in order to boost productivity and kick-start creativity. We know that it is good to find those things that help us best launch into the day ahead, but once we’re off and going, it’s easy zoom through the entire day at lightning speed until our heads hit the pillow at night.

We’ve flown through the day and feel utterly exhausted. So, why do we have so much trouble falling or staying asleep?

“NO white clothes after labor day.” This is a misconceived notion that most of us have believed. I, for one, never follow such rules. I figured that if designers produce white apparel post Labor Day, then there is absolutely no reason why I should not wear white.

Nonetheless, I was curious as to how this belief came to be and why so many of us continue to follow it.

I can’t help being a collector. It started with a flat file of paper products and quickly escalated to cupboards brimming with tea cups, plates, and silverware.

The possession of something lost in time has always intrigued me, whether it was an out of print book, a tea cup without a saucer, or some other strange flea market flotsam and jetsam that finds its way onto the shores of my kitchen. One moment it’s lost under a sea of old TV Guides, and the next it’s plucked out and put on my shelf, ready to be admired.

Items like these are usually found by a combination of persistence and luck, but with a bit of research you can make the hunt a lot more effective.

In the age of eye-opening documentaries like Food, Inc. and Farmaggedon, you’re not alone if you feel overwhelmed and defeated as to the state of the food systems in our country. It can be hard to believe that anything wins anymore except profit, profit, profit, ever slimming the margin between good business, good food and healthy communities.

Then we discovered Los Angeles’ Food Policy Council. They exist to heighten civic engagement between communities and policy makers to ensure that fresh, sustainable, ethical food (otherwise known as Good Food) isn’t a luxury but a right, fully accessible to everyone. We had to chance to chat with the council’s executive director, Clare Fox, for an empowering look at the change that’s taken place in southern California and, hopefully, across the country. We are all in pursuit of our dream job, and while some of us may already be settled into the perfect career, others of us are questioning the roles we’re currently in. At some point or another, all of us have asked ourselves, should I quit?

We’ve weighed the pros and cons, had discussions with our loved ones and mentors, and made decisions about our jobs based on the outcome of these lists and conversations. But, when do we really know that it’s time to leave a job and pursue something different? Are there situations where we might need to dig in our heels, endure the frustration, and stay longer than we thought we would? Most have heard about Amsterdam as the crazy European destination where travelers stop to explore and indulge in the liberties of the city. But this beautiful Dutch city filled with canals has so much more to offer its tourists than a trip down to the Red Light District.

With over one million residents, Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ largest city and a creative and cultural hub. Known as the “Venice of the North,” there are over 1,500 bridges that cross this charming European City. Amsterdam is also one of the largest registered historic city centers in Europe with over 7,000 registered historic buildings, a collection of eight windmills in the city center and numerous streets lined with their iconic narrow houses.

We first heard of Gingger Shankar because she’s the only women in the world playing the double violin. Then, we learned she also started her own music production company, working on projects for companies including HBO, CBS Sports, AFI, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the World Economic Forum.

Her talent and drive make sense, seeing as how she also comes from a line of women responsible for breaking cultural barriers and bringing Indian music to the West during the 1970s. This Embodied Achiever has a lot of wisdom about the music industry, and what it looks like to be a woman in any male-dominated field, so keep reading below to learn more about her story.

Our twenties are often a time to learn who we are, to try out our talents and gifting in the world, and to develop meaningful relationships. The focus is on moving forward and creating a life that makes you feel alive and getting to know yourself as an independent adult.

But while we move into the next life stage, so do our parents. As we age, so do our parents. Very few of us consider the impact of our parents aging on our young adulthood. How do we create an independent life and stay appropriately connected to our parents? How do we balance our goals with our parents’ needs?

September is Suicide Prevention Month and September 10th is dedicated as World Suicide Prevention Day.

Talking about the hard issues which leave us brokenhearted, confused, and afraid creates space for healing, hope and understanding. Awareness empowers hurting souls to discover they can write a different ending to their story of struggle.
